It all started with a few feral cats.

Our story

Welcome to the Feral Cats of Bergen County website! I’m Michele and about 4 years ago I found a feral cat right outside my business. I started feeding the one cat and the next thing I knew, more and more would come. I fed these guys outside for a year and in order for them to keep warm, I built little shelters for them to eat out of. Once I started seeing kittens, I knew I had to start taking these guys inside so I started capturing them and bringing them into the building. It started with a few, but I was always finding more cats that needed my help and with the love I have for these animals, I couldn’t let them suffer.

My husband would help me capture cats near his job in Jersey City and people in the Bergen County area always turned to me when they saw ferals that needed help. Eventually, just letting in a few cats turned into this whole operation. I capture, make sure all the cats are properly vetted (including getting fixed), and socialize them so one day they can find their forever homes. When my daughter was home, she’d help me find families for adoption. Now, a few years later, I have volunteers and donators to help me take care of these guys and we become a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in July of 2022. I love what I do and I am so glad I get to share it with all of you through here.

Our Focus.

  • Trap.

We travel to local neighborhoods trapping feral and stray cats that we hope to one day find forever homes for.

  • Vet.

Every cat we capture gets taken to the vet in order to make sure they are healthy. We get plenty of cats that need to be spayed/neutered or come in with infections, so we take care of these problems during these initial vet visits.

  • Socialize and Re-Home.

Our volunteers help feed and socialize each cat we have in order to help prepare them for adoption into loving homes.
